A note on food safety: Raw eggs should be handled with care. In a home environment, a parent can supervise closely to ensure good hygiene practices. Wash hands before and after handling raw eggs, and cook thoroughly before serving.
Age: From approximately 18 months
Materials: Large bowl / Fork or child-sized whisk / Eggs / Small jug for milk / Seasoning as per your own recipe / Apron
Steps
- Wash hands together and put on aprons.
- An adult can show the child how to crack an egg into the bowl — this step may be tried by older toddlers with very close guidance and a calm attitude towards mess.
- Invite the child to whisk the egg using a fork or small whisk, demonstrating a steady circular or back-and-forth motion.
- Add a small splash of milk from a child-sized jug — the child may be able to pour this themselves.
- Season as desired. If using a salt or spice shaker, this can be an enjoyable step for the child to try.
- Continue whisking together until combined.
- All cooking on the hob is done entirely by the adult. The child can observe from a safe distance.
Note: Cooking involves heat, sharp tools, and raw food — adapt each step to your child’s age and ability, and always maintain close supervision throughout.
