Sensitive Period For Language (Birth To 6 Years)

The sensitive period for language is one of the longest and most significant in early childhood, beginning from approximately 7 months in utero and continuing to around 5.5 to 6 years of age. Language encompasses far more than speaking — it includes listening, comprehension, reading, and writing, all of which develop across overlapping phases during this period.

Key Phases of Language Development

  • Birth to approximately 2.5–3 years: The sensitive period for spoken language. This phase begins before birth, as babies in utero hear and become familiar with the sounds and rhythms of the voices around them. The journey progresses from babbling to single words, to simple phrases, to two and three-word sentences, with vocabulary and comprehension expanding continuously. By around age three, many children are speaking in short sentences, though the pace varies widely.
  • Approximately 3.5 to 5 years: Growing interest in written language — exploring letters, sounds, and eventually simple reading and writing — typically begins in this phase in a Montessori environment.

Supporting Language Development at Home

  • Speak to your child in clear, rich language — complete sentences, accurate vocabulary, and varied expression.
  • Read aloud regularly from an early age. Books expose children to vocabulary and sentence structures they may not encounter in everyday conversation.
  • Listen actively — give children time to finish their thoughts, and respond genuinely to what they say.
  • Avoid anticipating every need — if children always have their needs met before they can express them, they have less motivation to develop language.
  • Limit passive screen time and prioritise real conversation and human interaction, which are the primary drivers of early language development.

A second language is also often acquired with relative ease during this sensitive period, particularly when a child is immersed in it naturally from an early age.
