Sensitive Period For Movement (Birth To 4 Years)

The sensitive period for movement unfolds across two overlapping phases:

Phase 1: Gross and Fine Motor Acquisition (Birth to Approximately 2.5 Years)

During this phase, children are driven to develop fundamental movement skills — walking, crawling, pulling to stand, and the intentional use of the hands. To support this period, the environment should offer plenty of opportunity for movement: space to crawl and pull up, encouragement to walk with or without assistance, and materials that engage and develop the hands — items to grasp, turn, insert, hook, bat, and release.

Crucially, giving children the opportunity to repeat movements is important. Repetition is not boredom — it is how the nervous system consolidates and refines physical skills.

Phase 2: Refinement and Coordination of Movement (Approximately 2.5 to 4.5 Years)

As children move into this phase, coordination becomes more sophisticated. They may begin using both hands in coordination, develop the pincer grip needed for precise work, and practise increasingly complex tasks such as pouring, cutting, dressing themselves, and using tools. Gross motor activities also become more purposeful — running, jumping, balancing, and climbing with growing control and confidence.

Supporting Movement at Home

• Create a safe space where children can move freely and explore at their own pace.
• Offer materials appropriate to their current developmental stage that engage the hands.
• Avoid overly confining children to pushchairs, highchairs, or seats for extended periods when they could safely be moving.
• Allow time outdoors daily where possible — outdoor environments naturally support diverse, meaningful movement.
