Between approximately 2 and 6 years of age, children move into a sensitive period for grace and courtesy — developing an awareness of social norms, politeness, and respectful interaction with others.
In a Montessori classroom for children aged 3 to 6, specific lessons in grace and courtesy are introduced directly — for example, practising how to greet someone, how to interrupt politely, or how to offer and receive help graciously. These are presented as skills to be learned and practised, not simply rules to follow.
For children under three years old, modelling is the primary method. Adults who consistently use kind language, say please and thank you, greet others warmly, and demonstrate respectful behaviour give children a living example to absorb. Young children are remarkably attentive observers, and what they see around them shapes their own developing social behaviour.
Creating opportunities for positive social interaction — with family, in the community, or through gentle play alongside other children — also supports this development naturally.
Other Montessori Sensitive Periods
- Sensitive Period for Order (approximately 18 months to 2 years)
- Sensitive Period for Language (birth to 6 years)
- Sensitive Period for Movement (birth to 4 years)

Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. 🙂 Cheers! Sandra. R.
My twin girls are two and a half, they are showing their independence now and I believe in encouraging them to learn at their own pace. All children would benefit for this way of teaching because they would really reach their full potential, if this approach was used. I’m all for it!
