Brushing hair is a simple self-care activity that young children often find fascinating — especially when they can see themselves in a mirror. This activity supports independence, fine motor development, and a positive relationship with personal care routines.
Age: From approximately 12 months
Materials: Child-height mirror / Child-sized hairbrush or comb / Hair clips if applicable / A small basket or drawer where the brush is kept accessibly
The Activity
- Stand or sit together in front of a mirror where the child can clearly see themselves.
- Take your own brush and demonstrate slowly and deliberately. To brush the right side of the head, place the left hand gently over the left side of the head, then brush downwards. Repeat on the opposite side, crossing arms in front — this exaggerated motion makes it easier for the child to see each area being brushed.
- Move through each section of the hair calmly and intentionally.
- Return the brush to its designated basket or shelf when finished — this return step is part of the activity and builds the habit of order.
- Invite the child to try with their own brush. Allow them to explore this freely, helping gently only where needed.
Note: For very young children, the goal is participation and familiarity, not a perfectly brushed result. Over time, with repetition, the skill and independence will naturally develop.

please send some other important activities
I really love the activity. My daughter is 2 years, I think that she is pretty independent, but I already saw that there are some things that she can learn. Please give more tips on what and how to teach our little ones. I have another baby on the way and I want start very early with her 🙂 thank you so much!
