Language To Use When Talking To Infants

montessori language infants

When talking to young infants, many people naturally shift to a higher-pitched, melodic tone — often called motherese or infant-directed speech. This appears to come instinctively to most adults when in the company of a very young baby. Research suggests that infants may be particularly responsive to the higher tones in the human voice, making this style of communication well-suited to early verbal interaction.

Gently touching or holding your baby as you talk to them can also be meaningful. Naming body parts while touching them — during nappy changes, bath time, or play — helps build a young infant’s early awareness of their own body. Babies at this stage are highly sensorial learners.

Simple nursery rhymes and songs that involve movement work beautifully here — for example, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” with corresponding touch. Even if you do not know many rhymes, singing familiar songs in a gentle, soothing voice is beneficial. From as early as before birth, babies have been hearing both parents’ voices, and hearing them again is naturally comforting.

Reading to infants, even from the very early weeks, can be a warm and enjoyable shared experience. Try using a sing-song voice and keeping the tone calm and soothing rather than loud or overstimulating.

The Dance of Communication

From around six months of age, babies often begin experimenting with their own sounds. This is a wonderful time to begin what might be called a dance of communication — you speak or make a sound, you pause, baby responds with a noise or expression, you respond back. This gentle back-and-forth exchange is one of the earliest and most important foundations for language development. Dedicate even a few minutes of uninterrupted one-on-one time each day to this kind of interaction.
