Activity: Cooking Rice Using A Rice Cooker

A simple and satisfying activity that familiarises young children with the process of preparing food in the kitchen. Using a rice cooker removes the need for stovetop supervision, making this a more accessible introduction to cooking.

Age: From approximately 14 months

Materials: Small measuring cup / Rice in a container / Rice cooker / Apron

The Activity

  1. Wash hands together and put on aprons.
  2. Pre-measure the rice into a small bowl if needed, so the child can transfer it to the rice cooker using a small cup or large spoon — this supports early measurement and pouring skills.
  3. Once the uncooked rice is in the cooker, help the child carry it safely to the sink.
  4. If they are able, invite the child to turn on the tap and help add water to the cooker.
  5. Encourage the child to swirl or “wash” the rice gently before an adult helps drain and replace with fresh water to the correct level.
  6. An adult places the cooker on its base and turns it on. The child can observe and listen for the click that indicates the rice is cooked.

Note: The rice cooker gets hot during and after cooking — always ensure the child is a safe distance during the cooking cycle. Adapt steps to your child’s individual stage of development.
