How To Teach Children To Put On a Coat by Themselves

Independence in dressing is a key practical life skill in the Montessori approach. Putting on a coat independently is something most children can learn from around two years of age with patient demonstration. The following steps use a method that many Montessori educators recommend — it works by using momentum and may feel surprising at first, but children often pick it up quickly once they have seen it demonstrated.

Steps

  1. Lay the jacket on the floor with the collar or hood nearest the child’s feet, facing upwards (inside facing up).
  2. Ask your child to stand behind the collar, facing the coat.
  3. Bend down and push one hand and arm all the way through the nearest sleeve, until the hand comes out the other end.
  4. Repeat with the other arm in the other sleeve.
  5. Begin to stand up slowly, bringing the coat up with both arms as you rise.
  6. As you stand fully upright, lift both arms up simultaneously — using the momentum to flip the coat up and over your head so it lands on your shoulders.
  7. Settle the coat into place on both shoulders and fasten as desired.

Demonstrate this several times before inviting your child to try. Be patient — it often takes a number of attempts before the flip step comes together, but the sense of achievement when it does is wonderful.

Note: This method works best with lightweight jackets. For very heavy coats or very young children, adapting the approach or assisting is perfectly fine — the goal is building towards independence gradually.

  1. I thought you were insane or joking when I read the complicated description of putting your coat on upside down…until I saw the video. So cool. Can’t wait to try it myself.
